Montagu

Before we attended Harry's funeral, we went for a walk down to the sea. I always enjoy exploring the edge of the sea - studying amazing rock formations, collecting shells or just observing life in a rock pool. It seemed to be just the right place to be on such a day. Harry enjoyed fishing, so I wondered how often he had visited this place, when he lived at Montagu.

Vale Harry Williams

Edward and Harry

Last week, another very good friend passed. He was Harry Williams who grew up at Montagu which is a beautiful dairy farming area situated on the far North West coast area of Tasmania. In 1955, he and his wife Lexie and children - Viv, Deanne and Vicki moved to a farm across the road from my parents at West Ridgley where they remained for many years until their retirement. Our families have been very close friends ever since. Today, Noel and I travelled to Montagu to attend Harry's funeral.

James Broomhall - my gg grandfather

My gg grandfather's resting place is located in the burial ground at St Mark's Church on the hill in Deloraine. I like to visit his resting place when ever I visit Deloraine.

JAMES BROOMHALL was tried at Chester, Cheshire in England on 10th April,1824 for stealing 31 yards of velveteen and some keys and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. According to his convict records, James was single, 20 years of age, 5'10 1/2" ,with brown hair and brown eyes. His occupation was given as farm labourer and ploughman. His native place was listed as Wrexham.

James travelled on the ship"LADY EAST" which arrived in Hobart on 9th April 1825. He was assigned to Mr. W. Bryan who had a Free Grant at "Glenmore" near Carrick. James was granted his freedom in January 1832.

MARY COHEN was a free female immigrant who arrived in Tasmania aboard the ship "AmeliaThompson" which arrived in Launceston on 2nd August 1836. Official records show that Mary was 18 and she was engaged by Mrs. Chitty of Westbury as a general servant.

An entry dated 18th February 1838 in the Longford Church of England Parish Register, records the baptism of JAMES son of JAMES BROOMHALL and MARY COHEN of "Cornea" and also gives his birth date as 8th December,1837 at Carrick..

On the next day the same church records the marriage of JAMES BROOMHALL and MARY COHEN. As they were recorded as belonging to the Parish of Hadspen, the wedding may have taken place there.

According to official records, it is believed that there were ten other children born to JAMES and MARY.

JAMES 1837
JOHN, 1840c
THOMAS
MARGARET
MICHAEL'S birth was registered as 20th January,1844, in the Deloraine District.
Next came RICHARD, 1847c
then MARY on 1st April,1849,
ELLEN 2nd January,1851,
ELIZA 12th June,1852,
JANE 25th,1854,
CAROLINE18th June 1856.

The girls were baptised within a few months of their birth, Mary's being recorded at St.Joseph's Catholic Church, Launceston and the others at the Westbury Catholic Church. It appears that the girls were raised as Catholics, while the boys were raised as members of the Church of England.

JAMES BROOMHALL died on the 23rd of June,1875 ... 'of old age and natural decay' ... at Reedy Marsh. He was buried in the grounds of St.Mark's Church of England, Deloraine where his headstone may be located to the left of the entrance to the burial ground.

An echidna

Just as we were preparing to leave the car park, Noel noticed an echidna hurrying down a side road. I had to move very quickly to get close enough to the echidna, so that I could take these photographs.

Alum Cliffs

Noel, Hadie and John after our visit to the Alum Cliffs look out.

Sculpture at the entrance to the park.

Some interesting twists in the old logs.

Deposits of ochre.

Today we joined with two of our Baha'i friends, John and Hadie MacLeod, for a Devotional at the Alum Cliffs. The spectacular Tulampanga National Park is situated inland from Deloraine and near Mole Creek.

It is an area of special significance for the Tasmanian aboriginal community as it is near the area known as Kooparoona Niara (Mountain of the Spirits) or the Great Western Tiers.

I have had an old postcard of the Cliffs that overlook part of the Mersey River for several years but this is the first time that I have actually visited the site. I took many photos as we gazed down on the river and cliffs from the excellent look out.

When I down loaded my photos , it was interesting to compare my photo with the image on the 100 year old postcard.

Some special Holdens

When we arrived at the car park for the Alum Cliffs walk, we were delighted to find several early model Holden cars lined up in the park.

Vale Jean James

Keith and Jean James

A dear Baha'i friend, Jean James passed very suddenly last Sunday evening. Jean and her husband Keith have lived in Scottsdale for many years. It was a shock to learn of her passing. She was a very generous and caring person. Jean's funeral was held in Scottsdale this afternoon. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon for the moving Baha'i service.

This afternoon, Noel and I conducted an art workshop for some friends. We explored finger painting, monoprinting, modelling with salt ceramic, preparing glue and string prints, as well as painting with acrylics. We had a very enjoyable time. Later we had some time to discuss the amazing stages of symbolic development in the art making of children.
