We visit Stanley

Today we set off for the North West Coast to spend some time in one of our favourite spots in Tasmania - Stanley. It is a spectacular setting for a village, right on the coast and nestled at the base of the Nut which is the plug of a long extinct volcano. Stanley is an historic European style village settled by the Van Diemen's Land Co. in 1826. Bluestone features in many of the beautiful old buildings.

We spent some time at the Visitor's Centre and then we visited an excellent Gallery - Stanley Artworks - that is accommodated in what was an old style General store. We also visited the childhood home of Joseph Lyons, the only Tasmanian to have been elected as Prime Minister of Australia. His wife, Dame Enid Lyons was also a highly respected MP.

We also visied Highfield which was the origianl headquarters of the VDL Co. We spent some time walking in the gardens and exploring the farm buildings including a huge barn and the satbles. As the site is elevated it provided us with beautifiu views of the village and the Nut as well as aspects of the coast.

Before travelling on to Smithton where we had booked accommodation for the evening, we spent some time on the well kept cemetery that is located on the edge of the village right at the base of the Nut and beside the sea. A very beautiful setting for a cemetery.
