Richard and Lynne Howard visit us.

Noel, Richard and Lynne

Richard, Lynne and Edward

Richard and Lynne visited us for two nights during their current holiday in Tasmania. Richard is the younger son of Meg Howard, who is one of Noel's godmothers. We have known Richard since he was at primary school, so after many years, it was wonderful to spend time talking with him about all kinds of topics including books, movies, education, travel, family history, food etc. It was a delight to get to know his wife Lynne too as she is very involved in the arts.

Jenny and Rex

Rex and Jenny kindly invited Noel and I to visit their home for lunch. It is several years since we last saw them, so we had lots of news to exchange about our adventures since that time.

We have dinner with Dorian

Our grandson, Dorian phoned and suggested that we meet for the evening meal. It was great to spend time with him and to hear all about his adventures playing with the Navy Band in Perth.

We visit Wendy and Brian Hey

Edward and Wendy

Today was significant because I reconnected with a friend from my days at art school, in the early 1960s. Wendy and I attended many of the same classes when we were preparing to become art teachers. It was a delight to spend time with Wendy and to meet her husband, Brian. Wendy and Brian have a beautiful cottage garden and I took the opportunity of photographing their lilies that were in full bloom.

"A tree is a wonderful living organism which gives shelter, food, warmth and protection to all living things. It even gives shade to those who wield an axe to cut it down"

Another collage under way.

I have been invited to take part in an exhibition Tasmania 1:100,000 Mapping the Island which is a Ten days on the Island 2009 festival event.

I was sent a small piece of a map of Tasmania and was asked to use the piece of map to inspire my creativity.

I decided to use copies of some photographs that I had taken in the area which features a beautiful sink hole lake : Lake Chisholm. The reflections of the surrounding landscape in the very still lake are beautiful.

I enlarged and cut up several photos and rearranged them - even upside down, of the beautiful reflection of trees, clouds and sky in the lake.

The collage is too large to fit on my scanner - so I have made two scans of the one image.

Collaged postcard

I have been working on a collage postcard that I am making as part of a swap with some members of a paper arts group I belong to. It is the UK Paper Arts group on Yahoo!

I joined the group a few years ago, while I was working as a book Conservator in Israel. It is a wonderful group of people - from all around the planet who are involved in diverse arts activities. We share information and ideas about a wide range of topics as well as the paper arts.

Part of the activity of the group is participating in swaps. I have participated in quite a few of them over the years.

As there are 18 people participating in this swap, and my time is very limited right now, I decided to create one card and have it copied 17 times.

Ralph Falls and Cash's Gorge

Waratah in bloom

The duckboard pathway across the button grass plain.

Today we joined a group of friends to visit a dramatic waterfall that is situated in the North East area of Tasmania not far from the town of Ringarooma.
Ralph Falls plummets down the fluted cliffs of Mt Victoria in the Mt Victoria Forest Reserve which is situated south of the rural township of Ringarooma. As the longest single drop waterfall in Australia (cliff top to valley) it’s well worth the easy 20 minute return walk to ‘Norms Lookout’ that is located to the side of the falls. From the look out one can see the single sliver of water as it plunges down the mountain. As well, the beautiful panorama of the Ringarooma Valley opens before you with views to Bass Strait and the Furneaux Islands.

After our visit to the Reserve today, I would recommend taking the extra time and walk along the longer return loop that passes through tall melaleuca and mossy banks passes the Cash's Gorge Lookout. From the look out, it is an easy walk on a duckboard across a button grass plain to the car park. Today there were a lot of plants in flower and it was easy to photograph them from the duckboard.
