Guide Falls

We took a side trip up to West Ridgley to visit the Guide Falls. This is the area where I spent my childhood. I often spent time exploring the area around the Falls. I enjoyed exploring the rock formations, the plants and the river and just being near a waterfall. It was interesting to revisit the area . It has changed dramatically since my childhood days.
As we were driving through Ridgley, we noticed two female scarecrows. They looked very colourful standing in the garden behind an old style post and rail fence. It was dusk as we were leaving and the moon looked pink through the smoke haze.

Frederick Alexander

At the viewing area on Table Cape we noticed a plaque erected to acknowledge the birth place of Frederick Alexander the famous founder of The Alexander Technique.

Table Cape

We began our return journey to Launceston. Our first stop was at Table Cape near Wynyard. We had a wonderful view of the coast looking west towards Rocky Cape. We stopped and had a look around the old lighthouse and finally we stopped at a view point that faces east towards Burnie. From this point we could also see Fossil Bluff.

Boat Harbour

We headed for Boat Harbour Beach. Kim remembered the very fine white sand to be found on this unique beach located on the NW Coast not far past Wynyard. When one walks on the slightly damp sand on this beach it makes a squeeking sound. I have always enjoyed exploring the rocks and rock pools on this beach. It was the site for our annual school picnics when I attended Burnie High school in the 1950s. When our children were young, we would visit this beach each summer. In those days, our very good friends, David and Beverly Dunn had a shack very close to the beach and we generally made an annual summertime pilgrimage to their shack and the beach. Lots of wonderful memories.

Creative Paper at Burnie

Kim was very keen to visit the Creative Paper Centre in Burnie. We made that the next stop on our day trip. It was wonderful to see the developments that have been made over recent years. we were told that the Centre will be moving into new premises very soon. Actually, the building that the Centre will be moving into happens to be the original Burnie High School which I attended in the 1950s.

The paper sculptures in the photographs were made by Pam Thorne and Ruth Rees who have been collaborating on papier mache projects in Burnie for more than ten years.

Bill and Hiroko Washington

We set of for a day trip to the North West Coast. Our first stop was in Devonport to visit our good friends, Bill and Hiroko Washington. They were delighted to see Kim again. Hiroko had made one of her delicious apple cakes which we consumed with a welcome coffee.

Liffey Falls

Kim asked to visit the Liffey Falls. It had been quite a few years since we had last visited so it was a very nice way sto spend an afternoon. Although the drought has had a big effect on the amount of water in the river, the falls, the ferns and various wild plants were very beautiful.

Richmond

We decided to take a different way home by travelling through the historic village of Richmond and up the road through the Cole River valley.
Richmond has some very old structures including the oldest bridge still in use in Australia.
