Beaconsfield, PEI

We spent some time visiting the beautiful old home known as Beaconsfield. It was built in 1877 for James Peake Jr, who was a shipbuilder, a merchant and one of Chartlottetown's leading businessmen. Beaconsfield, with its mansard roof, elaborate gingerbread trim and crowning belvedere, stands as an enduring symbol of Victorian elegance and a visible expression of Peake's socail and economic standing.
The building overlooks Charlottetown Harbour and the Governor's residence. It was equipped with gas lighting and a form of central heating as well as having 25 rooms, eight fireplaces and expensive, imported chandeliers.
