St Dunstan's Basilica, PEI
On the way back to Ann and Stephen's home, we stopped off to have a look at St Dunstan's Basilica. This history of the Catholic Church of Charlotttewon dates back to 1721 when two missionary priests came to St John's Island, as Prince Edward Island was then called.
In 1816, the property on which the Basilica now stands was purchased and a small wooden church was built. ater in 1843 wooden cathedral was built and this was replaced by a stone cathedral begun in 1896. In 1913 it was totally destroyed by fire and the current church was built on the original site and was raised to a Basilica in 1929. I chose to photograph some of the exterior decorations.
