Clonmacnoise

Today we said farewell to dear Breda and set off towards the north. We planned to revisit one of our favourite ancient sites at Clonmacnoise. It was a beautiful day for exploring this large site and we were looking forward to taking lots of photographs. The remains of the ancient ecclesiastical site which is located just south of Athlone are among the most extensive of their kind in Ireland. It is situated on a ridge overlooking the Shannon river and was founded around the year 548 by St Ciaran and as his burial place it has attracted pilgrims for almost 1500 years.
The site contains several churches, a round tower, a castle, three stone crosses and a large collection of early grave slabs.
