Ministers Island

Ministers Island and the estate of railway magnate Sir Wiliam Van Horne can be reached at low tide by driving across the ocean floor in convoy. It is only permissable to visit the island as part of a guided tour. We were particularly interested to visit the island as the beautiful old home and huge barn built by Sir William were designed by Edward Maxwell. He and his brother William S. Maxwell were famous architects in Montreal at the turn of the 20th century and they designed (among other buildings)many grand summer 'cottages' for wealthy folk who came to holiday in St Andrews -by-the-Sea. Many of these gorgeous homes are still extant. William is particularly well known for his design of the building for the Shrine of the Bab which is a most Holy place for Baha'i pilgrims in Haifa, Israel.
