The Bodnant Gardens

We decided to aim to visit two N.T. properties today - The Bodnant Gardens and Penrhyn Castle.
The Bodnant Gardens were first on our itinerary. They are described as one of the world's most spectacular gardens. They were begun in 1875 and are the creation of four generations of the Aberconway family. One of the most beautiful features is a large Italianate terrace and formal lawns that are situated near the large family mansion. Below, there is a wooded valley with huge tress growing beside a river or stream. There is also a wild garden. The water lily pond with a pin mill at one end is a lovely feature of the garden too. On a path that winds up from the stream, there is a family mausoleum called 'ThePoem'. It has been constructed with very dramatic effect on the edge of a small cliff that drops directly down to the stream and wooded area below.
The cottage garden was in full bloom with roses, clematis, delphiniums etc with the addeed colour of a peacock appearing for us to photograph. Further down another pathway, the dogwoods looked spectacular along with huge rhododendron bushes and colourful azealeas. The magnolias were also in full bloom. In the garden shop, we purchased some post cards and a few packets of seeds.
