Sainte Chapelle
We walked past the beautiful Notre Dame and said au revoir to Violetta as we planned to meet her later in the day to attend a Baha'i Feast. There was quite a line up at the entrance to Sainte Chapelle - but it was - after all - a Sunday! The gorgeous building was designed to house the relics of Christ's Passion -including the Crown of Thorns. The relics were acquired by Louis IX from Emperor Baudouni II of Constantinople . The cost of the relics was more than 3 times the cost of building Sainte Chapelle which was dedicated in 1248. The lower chapel was used by the local people of the Parish while the very ornate upper chapel was for the use of the King and his family. The dazzling stained glass windows are the main feature of the upper chapel - especially the rose window. The statues of the Apostles are also a beautiful feature of the interior of the upper chapel.
