Garinish Island

Also known as Ilnacullin, this small island was converted into an exotic garden in 1910 for Annan Bryce who was business man from Belfast.

Framed by views of Bantry Bay, the island is landscaped with Neo-Classical follies. Many of the plants are subtropical and we even found an example of the famous Huon Pine that is a very slow growing native plant from Tasmania. We explored the beautiful gardens where we saw ferns from New Zealand, a Japanese style rockery and a rare collection of Bonsai trees as well as azaleas and rhododendrons. The central attraction is a colonnaded Italianate garden with a Classical style folly and a lily pool. A very beautiful place to visit.
