After coffee and food at Pret a Manger, we took the Underground to Trafalgar Square - actually to Picadilly Circus - and then we walked down to the National Gallery. It was great to see the fountains restored and working in Trafalgar Square. However, Nelson's Column and the Lions were under wraps for Conservation and Restoration treatment. We spent the remainder of the afternoon in the National Gallery revisiting some old favourites including works by van Gogh, Monet, Seurat, Turner, Constable and Manet. I was disappointed to find that two of my favourite Constables were on loan for an exhibition in New Zealand.
We also visited two special exhibitions -one was the work of children who had responded to a painting of a family dressed in Roman Style clothing and with an historical background. Some examples of work by children in response to the painting included jewellery, shell collections in special boxes, digitally enhanced images of children in various costumes as well as models of ancient boats.
