St Ives

Our destination for today was St Ives. So we set off from St Austell using directions provided by Terri Bunn who along with her husband Bill operates the Atlantic Guest House in St Ives. I originally made contact with Terri through a Yahoo group I have belonged to for several years, the UKPaperArts. It is a wonderful group of diverse people all connected through our interest in paper, making books, stamping, painting etc.
We arrived at the Atlantic Guest House which is situated in an elevated position and has a fantastic outlook over a golden beach and the open sea. It is also very near the Tate Gallery at St Ives. We parked the car nearby and immediately walked down to the beach. A huge cemetery is situated on the side of a hill overlooking the beach and the gallery. We were delighted to discover that since we are seniors, we had free access to the Tate Gallery. There was a very nice exhibition of work by the famous potter, Bernard Leach and his associates - including his good friend, Hamada. I have always found his work to be very inspiring and it was partly through his work and my interest in ceramics that I discovered the Baha'i Faith. For this reason I feel strongly connected with Bernard Leach and beautiful St Ives which was his home for many years. There was also an exhibition of work by some contemporary St Ives artists- including some very colourful and inspiring paintings and sculptures. At closing time we walked back up the hill to the Guest House via the cemetery, where we took several photos of the interesting old head stones. It was exciting to finally meet Terri and her daughter who made us feel very welcome. After a meal of delicious Shepherd's Pie, Noel and I went for a walk into the old part of town.
