Torrington and the Hummerstone family

Today we travelled to Torrington via Exter. We were invited to visit our dear friends, Jeremy and Clarissa Hummerstone. We had not seen them since 1967 when we were volunteering at Martyrs' Memorial School in Papua New Guinea. It was just wonderful to meet them again after all that time. As Jeremy is the local Vicar, they live in the Vicarage which is a wonderful old building with a large garden and beautiful trees. Their house is full of amazing collections of books, newspaper cuttings, collectables, beautiful old furniture and children's toys.
They were also hosting Eric, a gentleman from the USA who was in the process of researching the life and work of Clarissa's godmother, Constance Savery.
Jeremy took us for a walk through the town which is situated on an elevated area - so we were afforded wonderful views down to a river and fields. On our way back to the Vicarage, we called in to look around Jeremy's church which is full of very interesting history as Torrington was a Cavalier town during the Civil War.
